Weekly drops of wisdom from the banks of Mother Ganga

Living with Light in the Age of DarknessDearest Divine Family,

We live in Kali Yuga — the age/era of darkness, according to the Vedic teachings. You’ve probably heard that. But what does it actually mean for how you live? When the news is relentless and usually awful, when the voices in your head tell you you’re not enough, when ignorance seems to scream louder than wisdom ever could, what then? Given the hundreds of thousands of years the yugas (eras) last, are we just doomed to darkness for what seems like eternity? Here’s what I’ve realized: Kali Yuga is like nightfall or winter . We see it coming. It’s not a surprise! We know it’s going to get darker. But people in Iceland don’t spend 21 hours a day in the winters sitting in the dark saying “I wish it were light.” They light candles. They make lamps. They create light even when it’s dark. And so can we. The darkness of Kali Yuga isn’t just outside in the world around us; it’s the darkness in our own minds. The voices you’ve internalized from parents, from culture, from social media that now live inside your head as “truth.” Those voices aren’t demons. They’re ignorance. And ignorance can always be dispelled with wisdom like darkness can be dispelled by light. In this clip from our sacred evening satsang at Parmarth Niketan, I talk about what it actually means to “be the light,” not as some Instagram caption, but as a practice. How do we bring light to our own minds first? How do we stop waiting for the world to get brighter and start lighting the candle ourselves? This isn’t about toxic positivity. It’s about remembering what you’re capable of, even these days!If you’ve been feeling the weight of the darkness — inside or out — watch this. It will hopefully shift something within you.
