| Love Them but Don’t Lose YourselfDear Divine Family,Have you ever tried to love someone into becoming different? Have you ever held a grudge hoping it would finally “teach them”?So many of us are trying to create change in people around us the same way: by holding a grudge, withholding warmth, tightening our fists inside and calling it “tough love.” We tell ourselves that If they feel our disapproval strongly enough, they’ll finally become different. But the critical truth to realize is that people don’t transform because we want them to, even if they want to make us happy by changing! They actually only change when something deep within them becomes stronger than their habits, stronger than their inertia — and until then, our non-acceptance doesn’t do anything other than cause frustration, resentment, and anger in both of us. In this clip from our evening sacred satsang at Parmarth Niketan on the holy banks of Mother Ganga, I share a spiritual truth that has brought so many people relief: we cannot change others but that doesn’t mean that we have to allow every behavior in our orbit! Acceptance does not mean allowing someone’s addiction or other negative habit to derail your life. Love does not mean allowing harm to yourself, your children or others. Someone can be perfect “as they are” for their karmic journey — and still be unsafe for your nervous system, your home, your children, your peace. The practice is not to control them. The practice is to keep your heart open without giving them the power to steal your inner freedom. If you are navigating a difficult relationship — family, partner, colleague, or someone you dearly love but can’t keep absorbing — this reflection is for you. It’s about where compassion ends and self-betrayal begins….and how to love from a distance without hardening your heart. Click here to watch! With love and peace from the holy banks of Mother Ganga, In Sacred Service, ![]() |
