Weekly drops of wisdom from the banks of Mother Ganga

Happy Hanuman Jayanti!Dear Divine Parmarth family,

Tonight’s full moon marks Hanuman Jayanti — the celebration of one of the most beloved beings in the Hindu-Vedic tradition. But before you think this doesn’t apply to you, let me tell you about the night that changed everything for me and completely re-arranged how I understood my life and its purpose.

I was a few months into my time in India when Pujya Swamiji handed me a short English translation of the Ramayana. “Read this,” he said in the aftermath of a discussion we’d had earlier (full story in today’s video). I took the book back to my room thinking I’d flip through a few pages before sleep. Instead, I stayed up all night, completely absorbed, and finished the book overnight. The next morning, I went back to Pujya Swamiji with tears still wet on my face,  not from sadness, but from the deepest, purest recognition of purpose and potential.

Here was Hanuman, a being who embodied everything my Western mind had been taught was impossible: devotion so complete it could literally move mountains, strength that flowed from surrender rather than force, miracles that happened not because he controlled life but because he trusted it completely. While I’d been trying to micromanage my way to happiness, white-knuckling my way through trauma, here was someone showing an entirely different path.

Hanuman became what we call my ishta devta — my chosen form of the Divine — because his life and teachings cracked open something I didn’t even know I was looking for. The miracles we’re all desperately seeking don’t come from forcing, controlling, or trying harder. They come when we finally stop trying to be the author of our lives and start letting Life write through us.
In this video I share the full story of my introduction to Hanuman through the Ramayan that Pujya Swamiji gave me, what I learned about my own life, including my complexes and insecurities, and also a few of my absolute favorite stories from Hanuman’s life.

Whether you’ve never heard of Hanuman, follow a completely different spiritual path, or consider yourself allergic to anything religious, these ancient stories carry medicine. Real medicine for anyone who’s exhausted from trying to control outcomes, who wants to understand what devotion actually looks like, or who’s ready to discover why surrender might be the most powerful thing you ever do.
