| Not Everyone Will Understand You — And That’s OkayDear Divine Parmarth family, Jai Gange! Here is something that might really surprise you: The people who love you most deeply may not really understand you at all. And that’s absolutely fine. I hear the complaint so frequently: “They just don’t understand me.” We exhaust ourselves trying to explain, to make people “get” us, reshaping ourselves into digestible versions that fit others’ comprehension. But the deep truth is that other people’s (even our own loved ones’) understanding of us has absolutely nothing to do with our worth. People can only meet you through the limits of their own experience, and when you stop trying to fit yourself into their lens so you can receive their validation, something really magical happens…. I love the stars so deeply, but I couldn’t tell you how they’re formed beyond what l learned in 4th grade astronomy. I love ancient trees, but my botanical knowledge peaks at seventh-grade photosynthesis. But here’s the important thing: my lack of understanding doesn’t diminish the power of my love one bit. The love is pure, full, and so deep, even though I don’t understand even really a thing about them. When we can love stars or trees or even the Divine, while understanding so little, why do we demand that humans understand our neurotic intricacies or the crazy games of our psyche or all the ways our childhood is still affecting us before they’re allowed to love us?
