West Bengal Repositions Textile Identity at Bharat Tex 2026

West Bengal’s participation in Bharat Tex 2026 marks a decisive moment for the state’s textile industry, as it seeks to balance its celebrated handloom heritage with a modern, sustainability-driven future under the new government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP.

Over the past decade, the state’s textile sector has faced challenges of declining trade and the need to reconcile heritage preservation with market expansion, artisan welfare, and infrastructure investment. At Bharat Tex 2026, West Bengal is making a bold statement: it is ready to reposition itself as a global textile destination.

From GI‑tagged handlooms of Shantipur and Baluchari saris to diversified jute products, eco-friendly fabrics, and MSME-led innovations, the state’s pavilion is designed to attract potential buyers and investors. Exhibits highlight not only artisanal pride but also investment-ready manufacturing capabilities, including modern weaving clusters, integrated textile parks, and sustainable production units.

The mega exhibition, organised by the Bharat Tex Trade Federation and supported by the Ministry of Textiles, has drawn over 6,000 buyers from 130+ countries. West Bengal is among nine states and union territories showcasing their textile ecosystems, with its display positioned as both a cultural showcase and a business pitch.

Themes Driving West Bengal’s Showcase

The state’s participation closely complements the objectives of Bharat Tex 2026, with each theme reflected in its product strategy:

Sustainability – Jute-based eco-products, organic cotton blends, and low-carbon manufacturing models.

Innovation – Smart textiles from MSMEs, new weaving technologies, and design-led product diversification.

Heritage craftsmanship – GI-tagged handlooms, Baluchari, Kantha embroidery, and artisanal weaving traditions.

Investment promotion – Textile parks, modern clusters, and policy-backed infrastructure for investors.

Exports – Premium handlooms and jute products positioned for global markets.

Global sourcing – Partnerships for sustainable supply chains and integrated value chain solutions.

Artisan empowerment – Showcasing cooperative models, fair-trade initiatives, and welfare schemes.

Value chain integration – Linking heritage crafts with modern manufacturing and export-ready production.

Speaking to this reporter, Shri Sudipto Bhattacharya, Director, Textiles, Govt of West Bengal, says, “By aligning with themes of Bharat Tex, West Bengal is leveraging Bharat Tex 2026 to reposition itself from being known primarily for its iconic handloom traditions to emerging as a modern, sustainability-driven textile hub. The state’s narrative is clear: it is a bridge between India’s rich textile heritage and the future of responsible, value-added production. At this juncture, our strategic participation is more than a showcase—it is a rebranding exercise. West Bengal is using Bharat Tex 2026 not only to attract potential buyers but also to signal its readiness for global investment partnerships, reinforcing its identity as a textile destination where tradition meets innovation.”

West Bengal is participating as a key exhibitor at Bharat Tex 2026, India’s flagship global textile event, taking place from July 14–17, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The state is highlighting its rich handloom heritage, artisanal production, and investment potential.
