A new book titled Rajiv Gandhi was launched at the Constitution Club of India on the occasion of the late Prime Minister’s 82nd birth anniversary on 20th Aug 2026. The release was graced by Mrs Meira Kumar, former Speaker of the Lok Sabha and senior Congress leader.
Mrs Meira Kumar, an accomplished politician and diplomat, has held several key positions in government, including Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment (2004–2009) and Minister of Water Resources (2009). She made history as the first woman Speaker of the Lok Sabha (2009–2014).
The event was attended by dignitaries including Shri Sanjay Bhoi, Shri K.L. Sharma, Shri G.A. Mir, Shri Tariq Anwar, and Shri Mukul Wasnik.
The book, authored by Debaprasad Roy—popularly known as Mithuda—offers a unique perspective on Rajiv Gandhi’s political journey. Roy, a seasoned politician from Jalpaiguri, served as a Member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from 2006 to 2016, representing the Jalpaiguri and Alipurduars constituencies.
Unlike many works that approach Rajiv Gandhi’s legacy through journalistic critique or partisan bias, Roy’s account is shaped by his experience as a close associate. Having witnessed Gandhi’s entry into and exit from national politics, Roy provides insights into lesser-known aspects of his leadership. He highlights Gandhi’s foresight, neutrality, and patriotism, qualities that left a lasting imprint on the Congress party, the nation, and India’s global standing during his brief yet impactful political career of eleven years.
Reflecting on Gandhi’s vision, Roy writes: “Rajiv Gandhi arrived ahead of his time. As time progresses, his relevance only grows—the revolution in Information Technology being a shining example of his foresight.”
The book also revisits Gandhi’s pioneering efforts in Panchayati Raj, lamenting the unfinished task of empowering India’s grassroots democracy. It touches upon the tragic consequences of his involvement in Sri Lanka’s internal crisis, a decision that ultimately cost him his life.
This initiative to document Rajiv Gandhi’s legacy stands out as a personal and thoughtful tribute, offering readers both historical context and intimate reflections on one of India’s most transformative leaders.
