The Goddess Has Never Been Asleep. Have You? | The True Meaning of Navratri

Dearest Parmarth family,
Jai Ma!

A very happy and blessed Navaratri to you and your loved ones — these nine sacred nights of celebrating the Divine Mother in all her infinite forms.

People say Navaratri is when the Mother Goddess awakens. But the truth is, she has never been asleep. not even for a single moment. So what, then, are these nine nights truly for?

They were never about awakening Her, but about awakening something in us!

There’s a reason this sacred time is called Navaratri: nine nights, not nine days. It’s also nine days, so why do we refer to the holiday as nine nights? Why the emphasis on the night? Because it’s so often in the darkness that the greatest transformation happens. It’s dark inside the cocoon where the caterpillar becomes a butterfly. It’s dark inside the seed before it sprouts, dark inside the womb before a baby is born. These nine nights offer us that same sacred darkness of becoming.

In this video, I share the journey through three great aspects of the Divine Mother—Maa Durga, who clears away the dust and junk that keep us stuck; Maa Lakshmi, who offers a wealth far deeper than anything in a bank account; and Maa Saraswati, who bestows not mere information, but the highest wisdom of who we truly are. I also share a bit of my own story — including why, when I first came to India thirty years ago, I insisted on a name that meant power rather than peace, and what it took me many Navratris to finally understand.

And perhaps most of all, in this video I offer us all an invitation: to worship the Goddess not only in the temple, but in the women and girls in our life, in the trees and rivers and mountains….. and yes, even in the mirror.
